Why is the house named Fort Hill?
Our property was the Fort Hill Battery Site during the War of 1812. It was from our backyard that elements of the 36th U.S. Infantry and U.S. Marines established an encampment to protect the U.S. Chesapeake Flotilla’s left flank.
Trees were cleared offering clear sight lines down the creek as far as Vera's sits today and as far up the creek as the Town of St. Leonard. A boom was placed across the creek and cannon anchored either bank of the creek serving as a defensive measure against the British invasion.
